Rob Raichlen

Message from the President
Aug. 31, 2024

Dear LMU Community:

I am saddened to share that Rob Raichlen, interim associate vice president for communications, passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 29, 2024. He was 52 years old.

AVP Raichlen joined LMU in April 2017 as the inaugural director of internal communications. His first responsibility was establishing an internal communications structure, which had been lacking at the university. He developed LMU This Week from inception, personally overseeing every aspect and transforming the digital newsletter into a much-anticipated publication.

As his divisional responsibilities expanded, AVP Raichlen’s influence in Marketing, Communications, and External Relations became indelible: his direct reports consistently sought his guidance to navigate challenges, while senior leaders relied on his thoughtful judgment in complex situations and his enthusiasm for tackling fresh initiatives. AVP Raichlen’s genuine commitment to his colleagues' well-being and professional development, coupled with his responsiveness and dedication, were widely recognized and admired. He became a steady source of support and leadership amid challenges of recent years, including leading communications during the COVID-19 pandemic. His good humor made him welcome at every gathering.

AVP Raichlen also played a key role in LMU’s signature events, such as the 2019 Democratic National Committee presidential debate and the university’s most attended event, our 2021 “Megamencement,” held at SoFi Stadium. A versatile practitioner, his expertise demonstrated mastery in handling details and nuance with exceptional skill.

AVP Raichlen came to LMU from Mattel, where he developed Human Resources strategic communications initiatives. He previously served as director of communications for the Los Angeles Clippers from 1999-2012, leading the organization’s internal and external communications areas. AVP Raichlen earned his Bachelor of Science in business administration/marketing from USC in 1994.

Plans to celebrate AVP Raichlen’s life and career are pending and will be shared soon.

Please keep Rob, his wife, Amy, their sons Jake and Cody, his family, colleagues, and legion of friends in your thoughts and your prayers. I know that many of us will miss him dearly.

Sincerely,

Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D.
President
