It is with sadness that I inform you of the death of Joe Callinan, emeritus professor of mechanical engineering in the Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering. Joe, who was 79 years old, passed away Monday after a long illness.
A revered professor of mechanical engineering from 1958 to 2002, Joe was among the most recent group inducted into the Faculty Hall of Fame. Joe also served for nine years as dean of Seaver College, during which time he developed stronger relationships between the university and local industry. He was inducted into the Seaver College Hall of Fame in 1999, and was given the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002.
After his retirement, Joe stayed close to LMU, serving on committees and the Alumni Association board. Through his entire relationship with the university he stayed dedicated to the engineering students, and worked for their betterment as a teacher, mentor and friend.
Joe earned his Loyola University mechanical engineering degree in 1957. He earned his master’s degree and Ph.D. in engineering from UCLA.
Joe was a valued member of our community who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Please keep him, his wife, Lynne, and their family in your thoughts and prayers.
