K-12 Youth Storytelling

The Digital Veterans Legacy Project set out to develop and implement a curriculum that engaged students and teachers in Los Angeles with the LANC and veterans interred there. Here is an example of curricula. These are examples of lesson plans created by teachers that can be tailored to fit various classes.

St. Bernard High School

Students from St. Bernard High School – located in Playa Del Rey and part of the LMU Family of Schools – visited the cemetery, engaged in historical research, and produced texts and videos.

Teacher Workshops

Teacher workshops are offered to K-12 educators interested in developing and implementing a project with their students. Teachers visit the Los Angeles National Cemetery and learn about the Digital Veterans legacy Project (DVLP) and the Veterans Legacy Memorial. These teachers take this knowledge and develop lesson plans specific to their grade level and topical areas. Subject matters have included history, social studies, psychology, math and more. Teachers who implement the lesson plans have funding to support their classes taking field trips to the cemetery and purchasing any necessary materials. These workshops have been developed in collaboration with our local educational partner, 5M Legacy.

Why Did People of Color enlist in the US Military during WWII?

High School History Course: Students learn about the discriminatory experiences of African Americans, Japanese and Chinese Americans and use these as a background to consider the reasons why people of color historically have enlisted in the military.

Chinese Americans in WWII

High School History Course: Students will learn about the Chinese Exclusion Act and other socio-political factors to better understand the roles of Chinese soldiers in the military during WWII.

Buffalo Soldiers

High School Psychology Course: This lesson focuses on Buffalo Soldiers and asks students to use current research and historical data to assess the possible impact that the cruelty and disrespect shown to Black military personnel have on their mental well-being, specifically what is now known as PTSD.

How Can We Build An Effective Memorial?

Middle School Math Course: This lesson plan focused on the Los Angeles National cemetery and asks students to reimagine the site by calculating area and perimeter measurements. Students were also asked to provide reasoning for a memorial that honors veterans they researched as part of the DVLP.
